I'm curious, did '75 and later J-Hs come with any smog equipment(air pump, catalytic converter, etc.). My J-H was built in Dec. '74 and has no smog equipment whatsoever.

You're correct; '75 & later cars had all the "pollution" stuff on it, air pump, injectors, cast iron header, blah, blah, blah.
Since this was an "added" expense to Jensen, you'll find a tremendous amount of cars produced in December '74, just to avoid this expense.
'74 1/2 was the start of the "5 mph bumpers" for all cars(I call ours "55mph" bumpers) with chassis #18320. Jensen still used the Chrysler 4 speed for 630 cars(up to chassis #18950) when the much tougher Gettrag 5speed was put in(we call these '74 3/4).
Not sure what chassis # started the '75s, so someone please add on to this.

Thanks Bruce,

I imagine '75 must have been a new wave of smog regulations. In CA it's a double wammy, not only did a great car get bogged down with a lot of smog crap but anything '75 or newer still has to be smog tested every two years. I guess that's why you don't see any, at least out here.

From what I've heard it seems there were about 10,000 Jensen-Healeys produced, I wonder how many were smog equipped cars.

I guess I've got a '74 3/4 with VIN #19661, built 12/30/74, so it was probably in the last batch of '74s built.

Interesting: you're exactly 500 cars later than mine!
#19161, dated 4-12-74
seems strange they only made 500 or so more cars since mine

Since they built only 500 cars in the 8 1/2 months between our cars I wouldn't think they built very many cars after mine in the two days before '74 ended.

It seems like the '75s used 20000s for their VINs but of that I'm not certain, I've seen some discrepancies with the '75s.

Hmm. Mine is a '74, but it was completed 1-31-75 (according to some database I don't have access to). S/N 19839.

So then, yours came with the smog/air pumo and the cast iron header with the injectors?

wow--that really confuses me as all '75 & later cars had to have those items??
Can someone who knows more about the "smog" equipment dates step up here?

I have a later spare cylinder head off a 75 and seems to have a set of threaded holes with hex plugs above the exhuast ports? Was this part of a smog scheme?

Bruce, keep in mind that the build date on the driver door tag is actually written the European way. So your build date was December 4th of 74.

I have 18602 which was October 30th of 74. So they actually pumped out more than 500 cars in the month of December. And 1,059 between mine and noomg.

Pretty impressive rate when they were into the thick of it!

Dusco: yes, the injectors went into the head; years ago I had gotten some stainless steel allen head screws just for that reason.

Well I think it's safe to say the more we discuss this subject the more confusing it becomes, at least for me.

I'm finding Pokeyjoe's car the most confusing of all. It's stamped as a '75 but registered as a '74 and has no smog equipment which was supposedly required on the '75s. While I have heard of cars registered the year after they were stamped, I never heard of a car being registered the year before it was built.

I agree with you, but maybe the engine has been swapped for an a non-smog one?

I just checked my door. It's stamped 12-28-74. The database I referenced above is obviously wrong.

The date is still confusing, though. It's before noomg's, but the SN is after.

This was discussed at length before although I can't find the thread now. JH built quite a few 74's in 75. They registered the numbers and dated the cars as 74's with 74 build dates to avoid the new smog rules but didn't actually get around to building and delivering them until 75.
My car is a 74 that was built almost mid year 75 and shipped some time around August of 75.
Carroll Shelby did something similar with his initial continuation Cobras. He claimed to have "found" a bunch of frames in an old warehouse that were registered as 64's or 65's as I recall. He didn't actually assemble the cars until 30 or more years later but they still counted as 64's or 65's as far as the government was concerned. Purists have argued for years about whether or not they are "real" Cobras.

Since we're on the subject, I just read an interesting letter in the Standard from Ed Dias who lives in California. It sounds like he's recently acquired a '76 GT. Ed's got two problems, first he lives in CA, second the GT has had all the smog equipment removed. As a CA resident myself I feel for Ed, if he wants to get the car registered to drive in CA he's in for a wild and frustrating ride.

A word to California guys, if you're looking for a J-H stick with a '74 or earlier, no smog check required. If you're looking at a '75 or a GT make sure if it's not an original Cal car that it has all the smog equipment in place.
