Am re-connecting engine compartment components after engine re-build. The main wiring harness splits in the engine compartment - some wires go on to the battery connections and others to the alternator. At this junction I have a green/ blue wire which goes to the sensor and a black/ white wire which was cut off by the last owner. Does anyone know where this wire properly resides? (An Allison/ Crane electronic ignition is installed if this could be involved)

The JH ignition wiring can be a bit screwy.... There is a lead from the Tach that connects to the ballast resistor. Juice goes through the resistor to the other end which is in turn attached to the (+) coil terminal. The (-) coil terminal gets wired to the distributor. That's the simple part... Also attached to the ballast resistor is a wire going to the starter. This is a shunt that provides +12V directly from the battery to the (+) end of the coil at start-up. It is typically eliminated when an aftermarket ignition is installed. Use the wiring diagram Delta sells and a VOM to trace everything down before you make your final connections.

While I wouldn't apply the word 'screwy' to the JH wiring -- which is actually very logical and sensible once you understand what they were trying to do -- I otherwise agree with Judson's comments. To speed up tracing things out, one could start by presuming that the black/white wire is the one that runs from distributor to coil (-) side. If that proves to be the case, end of problem. Otherwise one must trace, trace, trace....

Mark: With an electronic ignition, wouldn't this wire be needless? Steve

Steve, check this site for a copy of your wiring diagram http://www.joc.org.uk/wiring.htm Brett.

Steve, Whether you have points or a Pertronix, you still need to connect them to the coil or to the ignition control box, as appropriate. With points this is usually done by using the existing wire in the harness, though it's perfectly acceptable to add a wire if you wish. The Pertronix gadget comes with its own wires, and for simplicity one will generally use them instead.
