Were the Girling brakes used on the JH common to any other car, and what girling part no's are the shoes? Thanks, Mitch Ware 1974 Jensen Healey JH5 #111119670 1971 Triumph TR6 #CC66950LO

Common to the Vauxhall Viva, of course, but other than that, I don't know. Possibly you could find something on the internet by using the part numbers as search key. Shoes varied depending on date and market: Non-USA up to March 1973, one wheel set was Girling 64937134mk. All USA cars, and all others after March 1973, each wheel used one 64379582nk leading shoe and one 64379400nk trailing shoe. Girling part numbers for the backplate assembly (basically the whole brake) is 64274427 for RH side, and 64274428 for LH side.

Mitch, I can't remember which was late and which was early...girling or lockheed...in any case the later brakes are the same as the TR7. If you're looking for shoes, contact http://www.porterfieldbrake.com. They are EXTREMELY easy to work with and if they don't have your application on the shelf, they can take your old shoes and re-coat them really fast (1-2 weeks). I use their High Performance Street compound on all my cars. I got over 60k miles on the front pads on my Infiniti that I also used for Solo II and driver's schools when the JH wasn't running. Needless to say, I'm VERY satisfied with the performance and service I get from these guys. Besides, the blonde who answers the phone is not only cheery to talk to, but she knows her stuff! Judson

Actually, the reason I asked is that a friend of mine, one of the few local LBC mechanics had a customer call him for shoes for his '72 and he was wondering if there was any interchangability between any other shoes he might have in stock. He found that the lockhead shoes are the same as on the TR7 5 speed cars (IIRC) but he couldn't find anything on the girling. It seems the size and shape in all aspects is the same with TR6 shoes with the exception of there being one small extra hole in the webbing on the JH application shoes. I bought a set on UK ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290045110068&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3D290045110068%26fvi%3D1 They're listed as being suitable for a number of Vauxhall Cars that I doubt were ever exported to the USA (I never recall seeing any in the US, and I lived there until '84): VAUXHALL REAR Firenza 2300 (with Girling brakes) 1973-76 Magnum 1800 / 2300 (with Girling brakes) 1973-78 Viva 1800 / 2300 (with Girling brakes) 1973-78 Victor / Ventora (with Girling brakes) 1968-73 They may also fit comparable Opel models from the period, but this is only speculation- and those might have been exported to the US. Maybe an Opel Kadett from the mid-1970s might be a possibility; and the larger Opels too, though I think that they weren't exported. These Vauxhall were exported to Australia and New Zealand, so you might find some there, too....
