As a new owner of a 74 JH, just starting a extensive restoration, I wondered if anybody had any ideas on the merits of changing rearend gear ratios to make the car a better highway cruiser. This seems a much cheaper way to decrease highway rpms, but at what cost to acceleration?

Welcome to the fold.... There are only two choices for the rear-end ratio: 3.73:1 (4speed cars) & 3.45:1 (later 5speed cars). There are plenty of guys who have traded out their 5speed 3:45 REs for 3.73 REs for faster accelleration, however, I don't know of many who've gone the other way. One thing to consider is the fairly tall 1st gear in the 4sp transmission. The 907 has an absense of low-end torque which would make starting and stopping around town hard.
