While I try to teach myself SolidWorks, I figured I could do something useful instead of fiddling about with the examples in the books. The point of the exercise is to build a model good enough to see what front calipers will fit or what modifications would have to be made to make them fit. For the time being, Ms. Jensen is actually in one piece, so I don't want to disassemble too much to make measurements. Could someone who either has their front suspension in pieces or have extra parts lying about take measurements of the hub (inside and out) and the knuckle/spindle? I am not hoping for a pretty drawing, a napkin sketch with fairly accurate dimensions is more than sufficient! I will naturally share the files with the community if there is any interest. PS: Rear disc conversion will be next... -- Joachim

This is what the model looks like now with the wheel suppressed: The spindle: I am certain about the dimensions circled in red, the rest needs correcting: The bearings are downloaded from SKF, so they should be accurate. I hope to model the M14 caliper next, I have a spare housing to take measurements from. All measurements are mm, btw. -- Joachim

Started modeling the caliper, everything is still wrong, but I will be able to deduce a lot of missing dimensions from it. I also measured an old brake disc, so that should be fairly close too. -- Joachim

Think I am getting there... Stock hub, rotor and M14 caliper, principal dimensions New hub, Audi brake disk and (still) M14 caliper Now I have to get the Billet4 dimensions from HiSpec, so I can see if any of the calipers will fit without major track width changes. -- Joachim

Very cool, and potentially very useful! Audi brake disk? Which model? Mike

I think I was confused for a second, there, I believe the disc I used in the above model is actually a VW disc, found on Golf III. It was just picked out of the Brembo catalog, and is by no means the final choice. I will find a disc geometry that makes further upgrades easy, there are hundreds of choices. The final choice should be a disc where larger disc diameters simply mean adding spacers between a bracket and a radial mount caliper. The original JH wheels are difficult to work with for brake upgrades. There is not a lot of room for the outer corner of the caliper, and the rough model I built of the HiSpec Billet4 caliper suggests that the track must be widened slightly to make it fit. Extending the hub 1/4" outwards should be OK, but I don't want to go much beyond that. I am still waiting for an answer regarding an official CAD model from HiSpec. As you can see from the renderings, there isn't much room with the original disc and caliper. The good thing about computer models is that you don't have to actually build something to see if it should fit. -- Joachim
