Sorry!

The factory used 80/90 wt.

I use grease because I have a grease fitting.

I don't think it matters as long as there's something in there.

As Kurt mentioned the factory used 80/90w gear oil. 4 ounces is the recommended amount.

Search for a thread titled "Steering Rack Lubrication" for a discussion on the differences between grease and oil and the procedure. It was Nov. 5, 2007 and Gary, you were a participant.

I rebuilt my steering rack a couple of months ago so this topic is still fresh in my mind.

Art -- Thanks for the info. I remember the 2007 dialog. You can see how long it has taken me to get around to replacing the rack and pinion.

Where did you find the parts? I sent a request for parts to Rejen, but they haven't come up with anything yet. I need to rebuild mine too, and shipping it off to England for a rebuild is seriously expensive.

For some reason unknown, shipping heavy packages out of England costs several times what it costs to send the same items from Germany.

The parts were purchased from Delta Motorsports. When I rebuilt I cleaned the rack, media blasted, primed and painted. Then replaced the balljoint ends, gaiters, clamps and gear oil. The rest of the parts were just cleaned before filling with new gear oil.

So I'm in the process of changing front springs and shocks. I disconnected the tie rod ballpoint from the steering knuckle. Next thing I know I have a steady drip of oil coming from the rack boot.
Thoughts?

I would really clean the boot and see if you can see any cracks or holes. If it's an original boot it's probably just finally cracked. When cleaned it will most likely have a flat shine. Give it a while and look to see where the shiny oil is appearing.

Also, are the clamps still secure and tight?
