I'm trying to fix my gas gauge.  I've already checked the sending unit and float, they are in good working order.  Next I turned to the gauge itself.  I don't seem to be getting voltage to the gauge.  According to the wiring diagram, the voltage for the gauge comes from a "voltage stablizer". 

Does anyone know where this is located and what it looks like? 

In case it's related, my tach does not work either (that's next on my list).

It's above your right knee on the side of the heater unit if you have a left hand drive car. It has a plain metal rectangular cover about 1" x 2" IIRC.

I think Kurt was referring to the heater fan resistor.  The voltage stabilizer, meaning the electrical gadget that regulates the power for the fuel and temp gauges, is normally mounted to the forward face of the instrument pod above the temp gauge.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the information.

Mark, the picture is great, it looks like it'll be loads of fun trying to get to it (with the dash still in the car).  :-\

You can just pull the dash pod out and it's easily accessible.  It may be tough to get the pod out the first time, but it will be worth it if you go ahead and paint up the rusty spike and lube it.  I can get my dash pod out with minimal effort now, and it stays in place just fine.  There are two screws in the tops of the outermost gauge openings.  Remove those and it's just the ol' spike holding it all in.  With some elbow grease you can get it out.  I fount it easiest to go ahead and wiggle my hands up behind the dash to remove the speedo and tach.  Then I could grab the middle of the pod on either side of the spike and give a nice, even pull.  It's easiest if you take the steering wheel off first.

Once the pod's out, the voltage regulator is easy to get to.

Thank you Edward for that worthwhile information.  I may just go ahead and try to remove the instrument cluster.  I've already got the steering wheel off, the lower switch panel, turnsignal switch cluster and center console out.

However, I have solved my gas guage and tach problems.  In both cases, the problem was bad connections.  With the gas guage, it was the 5-way connector (black) below/near the steering column.  I just had to pull it apart and re-connect it firmly.  The green wire in the "#1" position (according to schematics) was the bad connection. 

In the case of the tach, it was the white wire connection on the tach itself.  It took a little extra force to get it seated properly.
