I have a high pitched squeal coming from the instrument panel that runs my battery down.
As soon as I hook up the battery the noise begins and lasts throughout my time driving the car. I have to unhook the battery cable after each drive to keep the battery from running down.

Possible it's a blower motor stuck on? Maybe shorting out on the ground?

Another possibility is the seat belt warning module? It has an annoying whine and would continue if the actual switch in the seat belt stopped working. Module is in the drivers footwell though, near the hood release (above it).

Rdinstel,

There isn't that much under a J/H dash that could cause that problem, Disco has identified the two most likely culprits. If you get your head under the dash you should be able to narrow down the location. The fan blower is middle dash while the seatbelt module is on the far left.

In the meantime until you solve the problem you can get a battery cut off terminal from any A/P store. It hooks to the ground post and the all you have to do is unscrew the knob to disconnect the ground which beats have to wrench off the cable every time.

FYI, the Austin-Healey came standard with a similar battery cut off switch.
