My rear brakes (Lockheed) will not release after releasing the parking brake lever.  The linkage, including the lever that goes in through the backing plate, moves freely but the brake shoes are snug against the drum.  The wheels will turn using engine power but the brake shoes won't back off the drums.

There is apparently a way to release the self adjusting mechanism using a flat screwdriver.  I've tried several flat screwdrivers but am not getting the shoes to release.  Is there a specific angle for the screwdriver to be applied?  Over the lever or under the lever?  Just tap it or should some leverage be applied?  In which direction?

I rebuilt these brakes a few years ago and they've been trouble-free until now.

Had a similar problem many years ago. Have you tried reversing quickly and then stomp on the brakes - sometimes that will free them off.
