I just replaced my stock flywheel which I had tack welded the ring gear onto.(Because the high torque starter pushed the shrunk on ring gear aft) Everything was fine except my starter switch was sticking in the engage position. I ran the car for 50 miles no problem. The next day I fired it up again but did not notice the switch remained engaged! I ran it for about 3 miles before I heard an ugly grind. Upon inspection I found the ring gear had shifted aft AGAIN about 1/4" , so now the starter won't engage. Since I have to pull the transmission ONE MORE time I want to replace the flywheel with something where the ring gear  positively will not move aft. I still want to keep to a steel flywheel 15+ lbs

Any suggestions -sources?

Dave,

Sorry to hear your tale of woe.  Like so many things in the factory shop manual that seem to be the 'right' way of doing things, I have found there are much more cost effective, reliable, and simple ways of going about these repairs.

There are a plethora of good condition, used flywheels out there with good ring gears.  I personally have not had any trouble with ring gears moving on any of my or my customer's 30+ year old flywheels.  I have 2 in my garage and I'm sure between all the club members, there are a few 100 out there in need of a home.

Dave, why do you need a high torque starter? It seems to be causing the problem.

Kurt
