I am working on a 2.2L engine upgrade and a Ford T5 five speed transmission conversion and can't seem to find my notes on JH and Lotus pilot bearing sizes. I know the input shaft on the Ford transmission is 0.668 inches. I have measured the hole in the 2.2L crank I have and got 0.823 inches ID which would be the OD of the pilot bearing and got a depth of 0.720 inches. I know the length of the bearing can be a little longer than the 0.720" if need be. I was wondering if someone knows the dimension of the OD of the pilot bearing on a JH. I have a bearing that measures 17mm X 21mm X 17mm, but it is too loose in the crank and drops too far into the back of the crank. I suspect I need to move up to a 0.8281 inch OD for a pilot bearing to fit snug in the crank and I could move to a 18.5mm for the length of the bearing. The 17mm inside dimension seems to be just right for the Ford input shaft. I'm looking for any information to help confirm my measurements and to help me find a pilot bearing that I can use. I can use a brass bearing but I know it wont last as long as a needle bearing, so I was hoping to find a needle bearing that will work if I could just confirm the size of the OD of the JH bearing.

Dan, Do what I did and use the standard JH pilot bearing and turn down the transmission input shaft to match. Alternatively, you could always machine the crank to accept a Ford pilot bearing. The JH pilot bearing (transmission input shaft o/d) is the common " Chevy 0.590" ". Most 4cyl Mustangs come standard with a 8-1/2" clutch and .590" input shaft. For a complete choice of T5s check the following link: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index2.shtml You obviously want a later "World Class T5" with 907 friendly gear ratios. My choice would be a 5sp from a 1994-97 3.8L Mustang. The only 'hard' part is having the input shaft turned down from 0.66" to 0.590". After comparing ratios, lengths, bellhousings, etc. I abandoned my quest for a T5 solution and went with the W58. Please post some pics of your bellhousing when you can.

Judson, attached is a photo of my Ford T5 attached to an early Lotus Excel bellhousing using a wood mock-up of a transmission adapter and then bolted to my spare engine block. I still have some work to do. Attachment: P4220091.1.JPG (Downloaded 91 times)

Here is a photo from the underside of my car showing the Ford transmission mount being used with the original JH transmission mount to make this work. I did have to drill new mounting holes in the JH mount to accept the Ford mount. Attachment: P4300127.1.JPG (Downloaded 84 times)

Dan shut up about your pilot bearing already. It's ordered, today I was at Detroit Ball and they will have it ready in 2 weeks so expect it around September. And I have something else in the garage that your going to want to see.

Dan if I start taking pictures of what's in the barn I'll over run this forum with pictures of classic fords Taurus SHO's and a beautiful almost fully restored 49 chevy. What I'm working on is the Supercharger project. But I'll send ya pics of that. As for the rear end I think a Ford 8.8 is the ticket for a stock chassis car and looks to be almost a bolt in. Go with a disk rear and upgrade to cobra rear calipers that would sort the rear of it out. As for the front I'm working on that my Cobra R rotors fit the JH spindle but The brakes would have to be worked out and I would want 13 inch rotors up front and PBR Cobra calipers with 11.5 in the rear. Don't worry Dan when I'm done that thing will be a Jensen Ford Lotus. Screw Healey.

If I know what I'm doing and I can still measure it looks like any Fox III Chassis Mustang 8.8 is close at 52 inches backing plate to backing plate. So 87-93 cars anything before that is the same 52 inches but is the 7.5. Now the trick would be to modify the Mustangs quad shock rear suspension into the JH. I'll work on looking into that. I'll have to sell the Interceptor for scrap and just work on the JH here.
