Hi All This may seem a dumb question and it may well be but that has never stopped me in the past. I have yet to drive my 1974 JH # 15681 manufactured on 7/3/74 as it is still on blocks in the shop. I was playing around with the shift leaver today and for the life of me think I found a fifth gear in what I was expecting to be a four speed tranny. The car had an aftermarket shift knob (8 ball so cool...not) so it is gone and I put on the JH shift knob from the parts car with reverse up beside 1st gear. the mystery gear that feels and sounds right "snick-clunk" that I think is reverse is down beside fourth.

please somebody make my day and confirm the shift pattern on the JH 4 and 5 speed tranny. Thanks in advance

The 4-Speed has 1 thru 4 in the normal H-pattern, with reverse to the right and back.

1- 3

2- 4- R

The J-H Getrag 5-Speed has a dog-leg 1st gear... which means it's outside of the basic H-pattern, to the left and back. Reverse is straight forward from 1st.

R- 2- 4

1- 3- 5

Of course, if your car is a 4-Speed that has been converted to a 5-Speed, then the most common option is the Toyota Supra's W58 gearbox. It's shift pattern is the more common continuation of the standard H-pattern...

1- 3- 5
│─│─│
2- 4- R

Tim Engel

Thanks for the very detailed info. Well that answers that I probably have a four speed as expected but a fellow can hope.

My car was put away in 1978 and sat for 35+ years in a texas barn so no conversion likely there. What confuses me is the shift knob I got out of the untouched parts car looks like it would be a JH design and has reverse top left next to 1st. So I still need a proper shift knob.
