My first time on the road in three years after a W58 conversion was pleasant and painful. My fear is that I may have installed the clutch release bearing backwards or have experienced a premature failure. Is this a JH part, Lotus part or a Toyota part. brand and a part number? Thanks, John

I used the JH clutch bearing. My conversion to the W58 was via the Conversion Components kit.

I used the bearing that Colin included in kit. I'll check with the Club store or Delta for a replacement. On another topic, I was trying to find a domestic clutch plate replacement for the eventual failure, but it came up zilch.

I also could not find a suitable clutch replacement. I had ordered an extra from Colin at the time I got my kit. In the past I also had no problem getting my original JH clutch plate rebuilt locally (new friction material) so I assume I can get the hybrid JH/W58 clutch rebuilt when (if) I need it. If I recall correctly, it took about a week to have it resurfaced. Jim

I haven't started on my W58 conversion, but I was concerned that the throwout bearing provided in Colin's kit may be a cheap knock-off so I did some research and found that it appears to be a well-known Japanese brand with interchange possibilities from other manufacturers. The Conversion Component kit (mine, anyway!) uses a Nachi throwout bearing, 40 TRK30W 2SB. This converts to NSK TK40-16AU3 and SKF VKC-3578 The Nachi dimensions are 70x40x18.5. The dimensions of the cross-referenced brands differred (except for ID). Hope this helps... Mike

They are listed as interchange by the manufacturers (not me personally) and are not necessarily exact replacement. For a throwout bearing, as long as the shaft fit is correct there are different bearings that will physically work but differ in width or OD by a mm or so. Sorry I can't be of more help. Mike

Mike, Be sure to install a new Toyota transmission extension housing oil seal for the drive shaft tail piece. The one that came with the CC kit was externally rusty and of course leaked. Just over 11 bucks from Toyota.

I had a slight hiccup. My 5-speed 3:42 ratio rear end was too tall so I had to track down a 4-speed with a 3:73 ratio. Found one in Riverside had it blasted clean, painted and was going to mount the drum brakes from the 5 speed. Although relatively new when the project was started, the shoes were glazed and had a weird wear pattern. Fortunately the new rear end seems to have less backlash that the old one. Next stop was a disc brake conversion from Vermont. (A $1k story in itself) Just finished the install last week. During road tests the suspect throwout bearing did not squeal so maybe it will be all right-who knows? The tranny did develop a rear seal leak so that's the next windmill to tilt at. The W58 gear box is a delight.

Sounds like major progress and a net upgrade to boot. I'm finally back to more of a routine at home after spending virtually all winter and spring out of state. I'm hopeful that I will be able to finally get back to work on 10628. Mike

Be sure to check the diameter of your drive shaft yoke as Colin may have shipped one from a different source. My transmission seal is 58mm OD and a 38mm ID. For those dimensions, the seal should is a Toyota 90311-38032 SEAL TYPE T OIL List price was 13.49
