I'm getting a steady oil leak from the transmission rear oil seal on my Mk1 4 speed. Is there anything to be done (other than replacement)? Can the seal be replaced with the transmission installed?

It is very difficult to tell from the Shop Manual pictures...

If you're talking about the rear seal that goes around the drive shaft mating point it's actually not too bad. You need to pull the drive shaft, use a seal removing tool to get the seal out, and then carefully and evenly press the new seal into place. Once in, replace the driveshaft and you're good.

With the car up on jack stands, providing nothing else goes wrong in the meantime it's a 1 - 2 hour job. No biggie at all.

No, not if you’re going to pull the tranny out to do it. the seal is behind the transmission crossmember. Everything can be done with the transmission still in the car. It would be helpful to have a seal puller to pull the thing out.

As Jody mentioned, the drive shaft does have to come out, and then you can pull the old seal and put the new one in carefully. Be careful not to mar the metal around the old seal when you’re pulling it out. The old style cap for the brake master cylinder is the perfect diameter to tap on the seal (once you get it started) with a mallet.

I was able to pull it out with the car on jack stands and on a creeper. An air powered impact wrench was a lifesaver for the four bolts on the drive shaft.

Be prepared for some residual oil to drip out.

Did you mean to say "No, if you're not going to pull the transmission out to do it"

I don't intend to pull the transmission and I would prefer not to remove the cross-member.
