Pulled the original engine from Ms Jensen last winter, now it's time to tear it down, and hopefully rebuild it. Plan for now is: 2.2 crossdrilled crank and plain lower bearings More dowels in the bearing ladder 104 cams Mappable ignition, either ECU or 123\TUNE distributor 45 Dellortos 10.5:1 or 10.9:1 pistons Lightened flywheel and clutch Ported head and a valve job This will cost a fair bit of money, so don't expect quick progress! I got the engine up on the engine stand last night, and took some pictures of the sorry mess. -- Joachim

One troubled engine indeed! I have finally got around to starting the teardown properly, last night both cam carriers came off and were dismantled. #3 plug with strange deposits Scoring on exhaust cam bearing surface Exhaust cam carrier bearing surface The deposits on the plug is probably coolant, the engine was pulled due to a head gasket failure. I can't say how bad that is yet, because I haven't dug that deep yet. The scoring on the cam bearing surface is in my view bad. The width of the scoring matches the lubrication hole diameter, and practically all 10 bearing surfaces look the same, though the exhaust cam is a lot worse than the intake cam. I suspect particles in the oil is the culprit, but I don't know when it has happened. The question is: is the cam carrier beyond further use? Should I just get new ones from Lotusbits? The cams are destined for the bucket anyway, the plan is to use 104s. -- Joachim

Uh oh. The head gasket was "fine", but the coolant crystals between the valves of cyl #3 is not. I believe the whole head is clogged up, and that corrosion has eaten its way all the way into the combustion chamber. What do you guys think? Head full of corrosion products Coolant crystals at #3 I am afraid this head is beyond repair? So heed the advice and change your coolant every now and again! -- Joachim

Teardown continuing, and getting worse! Big end bearings are well worn All the piston skirts are scored #2 piston has a lot of rust in the ring grooves #2 bore I guess all this goes on the experience account. Over the last three years, I have learned a lot about cars and engines... -- Joachim

Final chapter of the teardown, it doesn't get better... Lower bearings 3 and 4 were the worst Upper bearing #1 I think the crank would need a grind if I am to use it again Could it be that the crank has been ground once before? All the bearings are from Vanderwell, and were marked 010 followed by a four digit number. Can anyone shed any light on this? -- Joachim

Thanks for the offer, Pete! At the moment I think I'll just clean all the usable parts up and put them on a shelf in the garage while I save up for the rebuild. I hope I will be able to afford a Garry Kemp or Lotusbits head in the not too distant future, but there is lots of work ahead before a new head can be fitted. -- Joachim
