OK guys I give, Where do I clean the oil and dirt off the block to find the engine number? I assume it's on the right side but from there I'm clueless. |

It's behind the carbs on the top of the block next to the head. |

I have looked and looked to no avail, am having serious doubts as to my sanity. Maybe you could vector me in a little closer. Above or below the distributor? Under another component? ie: the coolant hose to the manifold. I have located a raised casting mark, sort of a stylised (AM) are the engine numbers near that, if so how far and in which direction? Your further assistance would be much appreciated as my wife is beginning to get suspicious of my pearing under the hood with a flashlight in broad daylight. Thank You, Dale |

Ahem, I just reread your simple instructions and note that you said "behind" the carbs not "below". I will adjust my focus accordingly and let you know how I fair. Dale |

Stand on the passenger side (USA) and look down in front of the ignition coil. Last edited on 04-14-2008 03:35 am by Jensen Healey |

YES! Quite readable once located and degunked, and exactly where you said it was. Thank You |

For anyone else (like me) having trouble finding the number under the layer of grime on the engine here's a photo. That's the engine shock absorber that mounts behind the number. Just start scrubbing with a toothbrush til you see it! |

Holy Smokes! The 'B' prefix on your VIN denotes that your motor is THE long lost Lotus/Moss/Shelby top secret 260hp cross flow direct injection large bore 907 race motor (with wind up key). Just the GRIME from that motor is probably worth millions! |

Hi Mitch, the happy pills are working! ;-) Seriously, it says it was built in 1972, 12th month, number 1191. This engine has the rope rear seal, the breather box, and 115/115 timing. Kurt |

Mitch, that's fantastic news! I plan to powder coat that windup key and see what it goes for on ebay. |

Kurt, is that info from the Richard Calver book? I'm curious to find out more info about the spare engine that came with my JH. It's a 74 that's all I can tell: B7406-7743 Thanks! Mason |
