The screws above the gas gauge and the voltmeter didn't apear to be anchored properly so I pulled the gauge pod out to investigate.  The screws went into metal plates the had been glued to the underside of the dash.  The foam in the dash has deteriated enough so that the plates came loose and reglueing doesn't appear to be an option.  Any suggestions on how to fix the anchor points?

The original design stinks.  My car has the same problem and many others have implied that theirs do, too.

One approach that occurs to me is making new metal plates having 3 or 4 extra screws inserted to give a bit more strength to the joint between plate and foam.  Then, use duct tape or something similar to form a mold around the damaged area, and inject a bit of that expanding foam used to insulate houses.

If you try this, or some better idea, I'd like to hear how things work out.

I cut two pieces of 1/4" plywood (appox. 3/4" X 1 1/4"), centered the pieces over the screw holes, marked the border, and removed enough of the old foam to make a tight pocket for the plywood.  I used  Household Goop adhesive to glue them in place.  I put enough on them on so it squeezed out when I clamped them in place.

I have installed the pod and used care not to over tighten.  So far so good.
