I am looking to remove the exterior door handles in preparation for painting my JH.  No problem detaching the handles themselves from the door, but how does one disconnect the operating rod that attaches it to the latch, so it can be totally removed.  I see there is a pin and push fastener where the rod attaches to the latch.  Does this push fastener need to be pryed off and then replaced?  Looks like it would be almost impossible to put it back (inside the door).  I am sure some of you have done this before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, John.

John,

The rod slips into the insert and is held by a little hinged "locking arm" that snaps over the rod.  Gently pry the "locking arm" off the rod and the rod will then slip out of the insert.  No destruction of parts is necessary.  The "locking arm" should remain attached to the insert and can simply be pressed back over the rod upon reassembly.

Jim

Jim, thanks for the response.  It sounds as if you are describing the door lock.  I am trying to remove the exterior door opener handle and do not see the same kind of attachment mechanism you described.  I can probably take a picture of it if that will help.  Further explanation would be of great help.  Thanks, John.

Hello John,

Alas, you are right.  I am describing the clips on the door lock.  This is what happens when I rely on memory.  You would think that after doing two JHs I could remember.  Unfortunately, I still have to rely on memory or take my door apart.  My best recollection (trust at your own risk) is that the little flat adjusting bar (the flat strip of metal that is threaded at one end and attached to small rod on the back of the handle) has a hole that slides over a stud on the lever on the door mechanism and is held in place with a "push fix".  Again, if I recall correctly, I believe I broke one and used a "wire nut" on the end of the stud when I reassembled.  Since my door latches all operate, it must have worked.  Sorry about the earlier post.

Good luck,

Jim

Jim, this sounds exactly like what I was thinking.  There is a push fix and I believe that I will destroy it in the removing.  I will take your approach, and thanks for the memories.  John.
