Guys and Gals;

I am trying to get collector car insurance and the underwriter is telling me that there was NO roll bar provided as an option on Jensen Healeys.  I know that isn't true, and so do you, does anyone have any proof that this is the cars so I can send it along to this company.

It is hard to fight opinion and ignorance without facts.  Many thanks.

Jim

I suspect your underwriter is correct.

If you mean a 'roll-over' bar:  all the vintage photos I've seen show the factory-stock JH without one -- AFAIK only the Huffaker race cars came with a 'factory' roll-over bar, and that's stretching the definition of 'factory' just a bit.  Certainly there's no mention of a roll-over bar in the parts lists or shop manual, nor is there any provision for one on an unmolested chassis.

If you mean an 'anti-sway' bar: the vintage road tests I've seen either explicitly state that there's no anti-sway bar, or it's quite apparent from the cornering photos that the car did not have one.  And as with the roll-over bar, there's no mention of one in the parts lists.  Only the Jensen GT came from the factory with a front anti-sway bar.

I would conclude from this that if a new JH was furnished to the original purchaser with either of the above, it almost certainly would have been added by the dealer, and the only proof the car had been sold that way would be the dealer's invoice.  While I'm not an expert on auto insurance, I would expect that only the specific vehicles that originally came with either type of bar would be eligible for collectors insurance if they were now so equipped.

Mark;

I just spoke with Greg also and you all are correct as is the underwriter.  The "Roll Over Bar" was a dealer installed option only and not from the factory.

It seems problematic to object to the bar being installed on the car, but it's their game and their rules.  I'll keep checking the previous company has terminated coverage as they are getting out of the Collector Car Business.

I'll check with Parish and a few others.  Thank for clearing up the misconception.  Jim

I know nothing about Hagerty's newsletter.  I am insured with Great American.  I have 6 cars insured for $468.  Hagerty's on line quote for the exact same coverage was $533.  If you want to give my agent a try, call Sandy @ 260-627-3355.

Rory;

Seems I didn't over pay, my $87 year and your total annual charge of $92., seems about right.  I'm in CA and you in OK seems it pretty much Nation wide, it is pretty fair, I have unlimited mileage also, which really isn't a consideration right now, but it's nice to know for the future.

Thanks for the compairison.

I have my house and cars through Nationwide. They refused to add the Jensen Healey to my policy.

I think it’s worth noting that one should make sure that whom ever you insure with the policy MUST be for an AGREED value.  Classic car policies are generally for agreed value while ordinary auto insures (Stat farm, All State……etc.) will only pay out what they believe your 30yr old car is worth (depreciated value).

Nationwide simply that there were certain cars they would not insure. The Jensen Healey was one of them.

Mitch,  I don't know about you, but I'd like to know on what factors they made the determination specifically on the JH.  I think there is a lot of ignorance in the insurance game.

But like life, sometimes knowing the whys is just the boobie prize.

I had no problem with Agreeded value with Hagerty and I sure felt the price was fair.
