I was curious about the alternator split, too. It looks like one lead goes to the battery and the other goes to the starter, connected directly to the lead that goes from the starter to the battery. Most LBCs, in my understanding, just have one wire, from the + of the battery to the starter, and then to the alternator and the rest of the car's circuitry. The best I can guess is that the direct lead from the alternator to the battery saves some of the resistence created by the extra wire going to the battery...
