Once I figured out what the vacuum valve really did, which is nothing really except be a bug a boo, I removed it as did Joachim. I did replace it with a common household plumbing ball valve that I can turn off in the summer, but that is optional.

  If you have air conditioning that works then the vacuum valve may serve a purpose, but barring that, it is useless.
