Thank you Edward for that worthwhile information. I may just go ahead and try to remove the instrument cluster. I've already got the steering wheel off, the lower switch panel, turnsignal switch cluster and center console out. However, I have solved my gas guage and tach problems. In both cases, the problem was bad connections. With the gas guage, it was the 5-way connector (black) below/near the steering column. I just had to pull it apart and re-connect it firmly. The green wire in the "#1" position (according to schematics) was the bad connection. In the case of the tach, it was the white wire connection on the tach itself. It took a little extra force to get it seated properly.
