In my case for whatever reason a PO had removed the fuse box and replaced it with 3 or 4 in line fuses stuffed in a tangle of wires behind the firewall and to make matters worse he obviously didn't understand the difference between US and Brit fuses and way over fused it. Once the lighter shorted there was nothing to protect the wiring harness. The good news is though after the w/h melted down the fuses were still good!
This is an example of Murphy's law; A $300 wiring harness will protect a 50 cent fuse by melting down before the fuse blows. There are many corollaries - A dropped tool will land under the car in the car's geometric center, etc. We have all been there!
