Yes, all this conversation is with the understanding to be super careful.  If I were adjusting carbs etc, I would not be leaning over the front of the car.  I am a construction guy who can lift a two story house with jacks so I have a healthy fear of doing stupid things.
I am most interested in whether the belt cover would keep the belt from sliding off, like, you would hear a terrible screech as the belt rubs on the cover, and be warned about imminent doom. I probably could rig up one little "guide post" to have the same effect...  But maybe these belts just don't slide off, but rather break.  It's a new belt.
