You are correct in that both the fuel & temp gauge run off the voltage stabilizer, located high uo in the back by the 2 gauges, The GROUND for it is the casing going through a sheet metal screw to the metal gauge panel back, which gets oxidized easily. Highly recommend gthe MOSS one which is solid state for the 10 volt output.
As for the alternator, don't forget the light for the IGNITION , located in the bottom center of your center console panel, must be working!
