 I didn't add a lip but I do add a small turned steel ring into the gap between the edge and the main body so that it has something to clamp against. Seems to be working well. I might try that idea of just machining it all away and adding a larger steel ring, that would be probably the best thing.

It's just an awful design in general, thought many times of doing something custom that had a tab that attached to the oil pump housing and another tab on the distributor and just bolt it together, similar to every other car company did with a brain.
