I'm pretty convinced the problem is electrical, I pulled a main jet to check for fuel on the emulsion tube, and there was fuel to the ridge below the top holes, I think that is about right. Still no sign of life. It is clear that the problem is heat related, but there may be more than one fault. I just got a new battery, but even at the second attempt it didn't quite fit, some adjustment with a cutter and the welder required...
